💼 Two Titles, Two Different Entry Bars
The city's listings for November 9 and November 16 carry the same two positions. Which one you go after depends on whether you already hold a card.
Emergency Medical Specialist, EMT is for people with a valid New York State Department of Health EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic certification and a high school diploma or equivalent. The job is Basic Life Support on the street: treating patients, getting them to the hospital, driving department vehicles and handling dispatch.
Emergency Medical Specialist Trainee is the door for everyone else. You need a high school diploma or equivalent plus one of these: six months of satisfactory full-time work, full-time U.S. military service with an honorable discharge, or 15 college credits. Finishing FDNY-approved EMS coursework at a city high school or vocational center also qualifies. The FDNY's recruiting site describes an academy of roughly 17 weeks covering classroom work, ambulance rotations, hazmat training and an emergency vehicle driving course. One catch: if you already hold an EMT certificate from any state, the department says you are not eligible for the trainee title.
⚠️ Read This Before You Register
- No walk-ins. Each date is split into five sessions, and you sign up for one. Dress for an interview, though one is not guaranteed.
- This is civil service. FDNY EMS hiring runs through a city exam scored on education and experience, offered roughly once a year, followed by screening. Ask at your session where the current exam and filing window stand, and check DCAS before you assume a date.
- You will need a driver's license valid in New York by the time you are appointed. Moving violations, suspensions or accidents can disqualify you.
- No residency or citizenship requirement, but you need a Social Security number. Applicants must be at least 17 by the end of the application period, with no upper age limit.
- Accommodations: email [email protected] at least four business days before your date.
💵 What the Job Pays
The FDNY lists EMT base pay of $43,932 to $49,816 to start, climbing to $68,700 to $76,028 after five years. Trainees start at $36,330 for the first three months and then move onto the EMT scale. Overtime, shift differentials and meal money come on top, and the benefits include a pension that vests after five years and a promotion path toward Paramedic and Firefighter.
📅 Same Building, Same Day: November 16
Different event, different requirements. Jobs NYC is also running a youth development and education hiring event at 2 Lafayette on November 16. If classrooms and after-school programs fit you better than an ambulance, read our guide to the November 16 youth development and education event before you pick a slot.
