💼 The Jobs: Two Doors Into FDNY EMS
The city's event listing names two positions, and which one fits depends on whether you already hold a card.
Emergency Medical Specialist, EMT is for people who already hold a valid New York State EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic certification. The work is Basic Life Support on the street: treating patients, transporting them to hospitals, driving department vehicles, handling dispatch and writing reports. You can be assigned to any FDNY facility in the five boroughs.
Emergency Medical Specialist Trainee is for people who don't have an EMT certificate yet. The department trains you in its own academy, roughly 17 weeks of classroom work, ambulance rotations, hazmat training and the Emergency Vehicle Operators Course, according to the FDNY's recruiting site. You need a high school diploma or equivalent plus one of these: six months of satisfactory full-time work, an honorable discharge from full-time military service, 15 college credits, or completion of FDNY-approved EMS coursework at a city high school or vocational center.
⚠️ Read This Before You Go
- This is not a walk-in. Register first and choose a time slot. Interviews are not guaranteed.
- It is a civil service job. FDNY EMS hiring runs through a city exam scored on education and experience, offered roughly once a year through DCAS, followed by a physical ability test, background check and medical and psychological screening. Use November 2 to get your questions answered and your timeline straight.
- You need a New York State driver's license by the time you're appointed, and a clean driving record matters. Moving violations or suspensions can disqualify you.
- No city residency requirement and no citizenship requirement, but you need a Social Security number. Applicants must be at least 17 by the end of the application period, with no upper age limit.
- Need an accommodation? Email [email protected] at least four business days ahead.
💵 What FDNY EMTs Earn
The FDNY lists EMT base pay at $43,932 to $49,816 to start, rising to $68,700 to $76,028 after five years, before overtime, shift differentials and meal money. Trainees start at $36,330 for up to three months, then move onto the EMT scale. Benefits include a choice of more than 20 health plans, a pension that vests after five years, and deferred compensation and 401(k) options.
The demand is real. A report from the New York City Comptroller published October 16 counted 2,540 EMTs at the end of fiscal 2026 and put EMT attrition at 19.5% that year, including transfers to other city titles. Translation: the department is replacing a lot of people, and it is recruiting accordingly.
