💼 What a Hospital Special Officer Does
Special Officers are the security force inside the city's public health system. The hospital system describes the job as protecting patients, visitors, staff and facilities, at hospitals that never close. Some posts may also require a valid New York State driver's license, depending on what a facility needs.
💵 What It Pays
NYC Health + Hospitals published the full annual scale on both event flyers:
- Hire-in: $40,480
- After one year: $41,818
- After two years: $43,155
- After three years: $44,494
- After four years: $45,831
- After five years: $58,345
The jump at year five is the number to notice. Officers who complete Weapons Detection Systems training earn another $5,000 a year on top of that scale. Benefits include health coverage, a pension, paid holidays and vacation under union contracts, loan forgiveness programs and tuition discounts.
⚠️ Read This Before You Register
Four requirements appear on both flyers:
- You must be at least 20 years old.
- You need a high school diploma or GED.
- You must be a U.S. citizen, a requirement the hospital system ties to New York State Public Officers Law.
- You must live in one of the five boroughs, and keep living there for as long as you hold the job.
That residency rule is the one that trips people up. If you live in Yonkers, Jersey City or out on Long Island, this is not your job unless you are prepared to move into the city.
📋 How to Sign Up for Each Event
Lincoln, Wednesday, Oct. 21. Register through the form linked on the official Lincoln event page. Lincoln sits on East 149th Street in Mott Haven, a few blocks west of The Hub at 149th Street and Third Avenue.
Harlem, Wednesday, Nov. 4. Register through the survey linked on the official Harlem event page, or email your resume to [email protected] with the subject line "Special Officer 11/4/26." The hospital is on Lenox Avenue in Central Harlem, near the 135th Street station on the 2 and 3 lines.
Each event offers a morning session from 10 to 11 a.m. and an afternoon session from 2 to 3 p.m. Neither flyer lists a room number, so leave extra minutes to find your way inside, and bring copies of your resume.
